APS wk6 wrap up

Forests, Food Forests, Orchids, Layers, Layers, more Layers, and a whole lotta Plants. *Shrek voice* Forests have L A Y E R S!

Day 1 this wk, I drove in to avoid getting sick like I did th last two weeks, aaand what a fuvkn joy that was! NOT 😂 traffic, eww, single person in a whole ass car commute, eww. Yall do this on th daily? like i think th fuk not! nuhuh no thanks.
Although as selfish as it felt, It was nice to have free parking, and driving home in around 45min vs th 1.5hrs on th train is so good.

Th day involved garden tours, and lots of discussion. Lots of info on Food Forests, history of Northey Street City Farm, and tangents there of, bc I ask 10,000 random Qs 😇

We started with a guided tour of th Bowen Bridge Heritage Track. It's a very gentle track that runs along th Breakfast Creek North bank, from th corner of Victoria and Edgar St along th bend (ish) of Allom St. There's info plaques along th way, th path is clear, fairly level, (a slow cyclist passed us at one stage, thats a gauge of th terrain), and is well used. There's many bush turkeys, and at this time of yr there's lil fuzzy baby bush turkeys! Im amazed at how far and how thorough they scratch up mulch to create their mounds, entire area looked like it had been raked over, and th mound looked like it would pass Geoff Lawton 's 18 day quick compost height standards 😂 There's also Curlew, lizards, etc. This forestry is designed to be self sustaining, and there's been work to plant out new understory plants, and to find ways to protect them from th bush turkeys. Work has also been done to reduce erosion were th mangroves have thinned out.

We doubled back on th Heritage trail to come out in th Food Forest / Orchard. More layers! There's such a nostalgic feel to it all, its honestly lovely and homily.  Our tour guides expressions of overwhelm is so relatable. Since th floods just on a yr ago, th farms management changed due to th contamination, and it feels like a few places have fell out of priority, which is completely understandable, th farm is 5 acres! Th Orchard shows this th most. It lost a lot of trees after th flood, with others slowly died off. There's mowed strips for walking but in between there's work to be done. There's a difference between 'Suburban Square Shrub Lawn Guy™️' saying a garden is unkept, and an actual need for real management. Those unaccustomed to th Permaculture way would probably see a lot of this as just messy, "mow all th grass" , "get rid of th weeds" , etc.
There is so many great elements in th Orchid area, things I didn't even know we can grow here, and a lot of them have been here for decades! Th Farm was established in 97! (I think, fk my memory 😔)

Next we were guided along th 'Useful Plants Walk'. This path is a lil less clear, which i think is intentional, maybe not, idk,.. it kinda feels a lil more self lead, like when ur on a side quest, get distracted, and just go free worlding following what catches ur attention,... and there's a QR code that links to Norheys site, with heaps of info on trees etc - Useful Native Plants Walk - Northey Street City Farm (nscf.org.au)

This lead us to th front north east corner (corner of Northey an Victoria St) were heard about th impacts, and causes of salinity, and th way this garden was structured to remediate those affects. This was very interesting and highlighted an area I can rabbit hole in on to learn more. Moving forward in our world with climate change and th degration of soils, its going to come up many times.

From here we moved along a path that runs through th middle of th front garden that lines Northey St, (from th corner of Northey and Victoria St, to th entrance sign for th farm),... Well, that's if th path wasn't in need of a lil TLC, and th north east entrance to th path was blocked by growth - path needs to be redirected. Here we spoke again about th layers and functions of th elements, most was commonly followed by be ask "will it grow from cuttings 😜" (frfr snip snip! You will be mine Ice-cream tree!)

Day2 I was back on th train! This day was spent getting in, rediscovering, clearing, and redirecting that front garden forestry trail, plus a lil trim trim of shrubbery ("nih" - th knights ) out th front, and many wheel barrow loads of green waste.
Love days like this, being able to see what we've achieved, all th dopamine!!, and it was drizzling on and off! Fuvking lovely to have a break from th heat and my fear of getting sick again ☺️
.
Take aways, so many, I need all th cuttings, collect all th trees, and plants, and every thing. I'm never going to learn all these IDs, but I will slowly remember some. I need, NEED one if those small hand held chainsaws!
